Care for the Environment Exercises (Washing Table and Polishing a Mirror)

Practical Life in Montessori curriculum provides opportunity for a child to practice everyday routines that must come in an organized and sequence manner.

It is a purposeful activity that develops  and promotes motor control coordination, focus and sense of responsibility.

What are Practical Life Activities?

Practical Life activities can be done by all ages, even infants. These gradually become more complex at each stage of development. It can start with something simple as pulling the pants up, changing one’s diaper or even washing hands. The exercises moves to challenging tasks from concrete to abstract. For an example, spooning from bowl to bowl to transferring water from jug to jar.

The Exercises

In the beginning, a child learns with basic skills such as pouring, cutting, folding and spooning. While applying the exercises, he learns how to take care of himself and the enviroment.  There are other areas too such as Grace and Courtesy the promotes proper behavior and how to act properly which usually is presented through modelling, and Control of Movement.

Why is it a Necessity to do Practical Life?

When presented properly, these activities provide a sense of dignity. The child is learning to follow a complex task in an orderly manner that allows him to be independent and fulfill his own desire or needs. These skills, when presented as early in his life, develops self-discipline and boost confidence that is needed for him to accomplish challenges throughout his life.
